Valve Type and Code Identification: How to Avoid Specification Errors
A valve code is meaningful only inside the coding system that created it. Manufacturer model strings, piping-class item codes, equipment tags, Chinese type-designation conventions and ERP stock numbers can use the same letters or digits differently. Decoding by guesswork can lead to the wrong pressure class, materials, trim, ends or actuator. The safe method is to preserve the original code, identify its issuer and revision, obtain the legend, then verify every decoded attribute against nameplate, datasheet and drawing evidence.
Identify what kind of code you are reading
A project tag identifies functional location; it usually does not fully encode the manufacturer construction.
A proprietary model may encode series, size, class, ends, materials or options under a specific catalog revision.
An EPC or owner code links a component to a controlled piping class and commodity description.
A structured convention can describe attributes, but applicability and symbol meanings depend on the controlled standard/edition.
Serials trace an assembled valve; heat numbers trace material. They should not be substituted for product model identity.
A stock number supports logistics and may omit engineering details needed for replacement or service review.

Valve Type Codes and Datasheet Identification FAQ
Is there a universal industrial valve coding system?
No. Standards, manufacturers, owners, EPCs and ERP systems use different schemes. First identify the code owner and correct legend.
What is the difference between a valve tag and model number?
A tag identifies the valve's project/system location and duty; a manufacturer model identifies a product configuration. Either may reference other documents and neither should be assumed to contain every attribute.
Can a trim number identify all internal materials?
Only when used with the correct issuer's controlled trim table and edition. Verify the bill of materials because seats, stem, closure and overlays may need more detail.
How should an obsolete valve be replaced when the code is unclear?
Reconstruct the requirement from nameplate, drawings, measured interfaces, service conditions and function, then obtain an approved replacement datasheet and deviation review.
