ANSI vs ASME Valve Standards: Ratings, Dimensions and Interfaces
In valve purchasing, “ANSI valve” is often used as shorthand for an ASME pressure class or North American flange pattern. That shorthand is not precise enough for engineering release. ANSI coordinates and accredits standards-development processes, while ASME publishes many of the documents commonly used for valve pressure-temperature ratings, face-to-face dimensions, flanges and welding ends. A reliable requisition names the actual standard, edition, class, material group, size range and interface—not merely “ANSI 150” or “ANSI dimensions.”
Translate “ANSI valve” into requirements a supplier can verify
Do not treat ANSI and ASME as interchangeable brand names. Identify the document designation and the organization responsible for its technical content.
Class 150, 300 and higher designations are rating classes, not fixed pressure values. Allowable pressure depends on material group and temperature under the governing rules.
Confirm whether ASME B16.34 or another product-specific route controls the pressure-temperature rating and construction requirements.
Use the applicable dimensional standard, valve pattern and class. A flange standard alone does not establish valve face-to-face length.
Flange outside diameter, drilling, facing, thickness and other details—or butt-weld preparation and pipe schedule—must be coordinated with the piping system.
The valve product standard, ASME interface documents and project specification may all apply. Define precedence instead of selecting isolated familiar clauses.

Face-to-face, centerline and clearance requirements support replacement planning.

Handwheel, gear or actuator envelope and removal clearances affect installation.
The purchaser should review all critical interfaces instead of relying on a generic catalog image.

Is an ANSI valve the same as an ASME valve?
Not as a precise technical description. In industry, ANSI is often used informally for a class or flange convention, but purchasing should state the actual ASME or other governing standard and all required attributes.
Does Class 150 mean 150 psi maximum pressure?
No. The class is a designation. Allowable pressure depends on the applicable standard, material group and temperature, so the controlled pressure-temperature rating must be checked for the design case.
Does ASME B16.34 define flange drilling?
B16.34 addresses valves within its scope, including rating and construction requirements. Detailed mating flange dimensions are normally coordinated through the applicable flange standard, such as ASME B16.5 or B16.47.
Can two Class 300 valves always replace each other?
No. Verify product standard, face-to-face dimensions, flange series/facing, bore, materials, flow direction, operator envelope and project tests before treating them as interchangeable.
