Industrial Valves for Mining, Slurry and Tailings Systems
Mining valve performance is dominated by solids: particle size, concentration, hardness, settling and velocity. Selection must also consider dewatering, tailings pressure, corrosive process chemicals, flushing, actuator force and how quickly wear components can be inspected or replaced.
Service areas that require separate valve review
Each system creates a different combination of media, pressure, temperature, cycling and failure consequence.
High solids, long pipelines, pressure transients and abrasive wear.
Settling, large particles, remote lines and environmental containment.
Pump protection, solids, rapid cycling and variable head.
Corrosive chemicals, dosing accuracy and air handling.
Very high solids concentration, plugging and high torque.
Suspended solids, corrosion, scale and large-diameter networks.
Map service conditions to a valve engineering route
This matrix is a technical starting point. Final selection requires the project datasheet and all operating cases.
| Application | Critical conditions | Common valve route | Review focus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slurry isolation | Abrasive and settling solids | Knife gate, pinch, severe ball or plug | Particle data, flow path, seat protection, flush and wear parts |
| Tailings pipeline | Long distance and pressure transients | Engineered slurry isolation/check | Surge, closure time, bore, erosion, leakage and remote operation |
| Pump discharge | Reverse flow and slurry dynamics | Slurry-rated check valve | Closing response, solids clearance, slam and maintenance |
| Thickener underflow | Very high solids and low velocity | Pinch, knife gate or severe-service valve | Plugging, full opening, actuator force, flush and replacement |
| Reagent dosing | Corrosive chemicals and low flow | Lined isolation/control | Compatibility, concentration, precision, permeation and containment |
| Process-water header | Large flow with suspended solids | Butterfly, gate, check or control | Coating, seat, head loss, surge and actuator torque |

Slurry characterization
Particle size, shape, hardness, concentration and settling are as important as pressure and temperature.
Wear path
Review local velocity, direction changes, throttling position, seat exposure and replaceable components.
Maintainability
Provide flushing, drains, inspection access, replaceable sleeves/seats and practical actuator removal space.
When the standard selection route is not enough
Do not specify a slurry valve from percent solids alone
Particle size, shape, hardness, density, settling and carrier chemistry also govern wear and blockage.
Do not throttle with an isolation design unintentionally
Part-open operation can accelerate local velocity and destroy seats or liners outside their intended duty.
Do not bury wear components in inaccessible piping
Inspection, flushing, sleeve or seat replacement and actuator removal must be designed into the installation.

How this page should be used
Technical and commercial evaluation for mining engineers comparing slurry isolation, tailings, dewatering, pump-check and reagent-service valve options.
Raymon Valve technical content team. Final tag selection requires an engineer review of project documents.
The governing pipeline, pressure-test and material standards must be confirmed with the project slurry specification. Wear life is application-specific and cannot be certified from a generic pressure-class standard.
Technical scope reviewed 27 July 2026. Standard editions, certifications and project-specific clauses must be reconfirmed before order.
Industrial Valves for Mining and Mineral Processing FAQ
What data is essential for a mining slurry valve?
Provide particle size distribution, solids concentration, specific gravity, hardness, settling, velocity, pressure drop, temperature and cycle frequency.
Why do standard water valves fail in slurry service?
Exposed seats, cavities and high local velocity can trap or accelerate solids, causing abrasion, jamming and leakage.
Which valve type is best for tailings?
There is no universal answer; solids, pressure, line diameter, surge, shutoff, frequency and maintenance strategy determine the construction.
How should the actuator be sized?
Use verified valve force or torque under maximum differential pressure with packed solids, seal friction, wear allowance and project safety factor.
