Valve Hardness Testing: Method, Location and Acceptance
Hardness testing provides a localized response to a defined indentation or rebound method. It can support verification of heat treatment, weld procedure results, sour-service restrictions, hardfacing condition or consistency across a production lot. It does not directly equal tensile strength for every alloy and geometry. Reliable valve hardness evidence requires the correct scale or method, adequate section thickness and surface preparation, calibrated equipment, documented test locations and acceptance criteria tied to the actual material and project requirement.
Control the variables that change a hardness result
Identify alloy, product form, heat treatment, weld/HAZ or hardfacing condition before choosing acceptance limits.
Rockwell, Brinell, Vickers, portable UCI or rebound instruments have different indentation, geometry and conversion limitations.
Scale, coating, decarburization, curvature and roughness can bias readings or make the result unrepresentative.
Thin, small or unsupported components can flex or allow an indentation to interact with the opposite surface.
Specify body sections, weld zones, stem/trim surfaces or overlay depth and retain a marked drawing or photograph.
Converted hardness values are estimates that depend on material family and standard tables; report the directly measured scale first.

Surface readings and cross-section profiles answer different depth questions.
Maximum-hardness requirements must follow the applicable material/environment standard and project scope.
Hardness should be correlated with chemistry, microstructure, heat treatment and service loading.

Empirical conversions can be useful only within defined materials and ranges; use required mechanical tests when tensile or impact properties govern.
One easy-to-reach spot is not a sampling plan
Location, number of tests and lot/heat coverage must reflect component risk and the specified acceptance route.
Portable readings require procedure qualification
Surface, curvature, orientation, mass and operator technique can dominate results if not controlled.

Which hardness method is best for valves?
There is no single best method. Component size, thickness, curvature, surface, material, expected range, required accuracy and whether testing can be destructive determine the appropriate method.
Can hardness be converted to tensile strength?
Only with caution where an accepted conversion applies to the specific material family and range. A converted estimate is not a substitute for a required tensile test.
Why do portable hardness readings vary?
Surface finish, curvature, part mass/support, instrument orientation, calibration, probe pressure and operator technique can all affect results. A qualified procedure and repeated mapped readings are important.
How should weld hardness be reported?
Show the joint and indent map, identify base metal, heat-affected zones and weld metal, state method/load and preparation, report individual readings and compare them with the controlled acceptance basis.
