Valve Fire Testing: Qualification Scope, Evidence and Project Use
Valve fire testing is a design-qualification activity performed under a defined standard and test configuration. It is not the same as routine production pressure testing, and a report for one representative valve does not automatically qualify every size, pressure class, material, seat, stem seal or body-joint variant. Project review must verify product applicability, tested configuration, extension rules and required production evidence.
Six questions before accepting a fire-test claim
Product type and project requirements determine the appropriate fire-test route.

External leakage, through-seat leakage and operability are distinct results.

Select the correct fire-test standard for the valve product and project.
Compare supplied body, seat, packing, joint and materials with the tested design.
Confirm the documented rules used to cover other sizes or pressure classes.
Review test identity, laboratory/witness, instruments, results and approvals.
Maintain configuration and verify routine shell, seat and functional tests.
Include the accepted qualification evidence in the project submittal register.

Is a fire-tested valve fireproof?
No. Fire testing evaluates defined leakage and operating performance during and after a controlled exposure; it does not mean the valve cannot be damaged.
What is the difference between API 607 and API 6FA?
They are different fire-test standards with different scopes and product applicability. The correct standard must be selected for the valve and project.
Does one fire-test certificate cover all sizes and classes?
Not automatically. Coverage depends on the tested design and the extension rules accepted by the governing standard and purchaser.
Is fire testing performed on every production valve?
Fire testing is generally a qualification activity. Production valves still require their routine and project-specified inspection and tests.
