Industrial Valve Pressure Testing: Scope, Evidence and Acceptance
Valve pressure testing verifies defined aspects of pressure-boundary and closure integrity under controlled conditions. A useful test specification identifies the governing standard and edition, test medium, pressure basis, stabilization and hold requirements, allowable leakage, test direction, measurement method, safety controls, witness points and the records required for each valve tag.

Do not confuse fixture leakage with valve leakage
The source must be located and the test system shown to be tight before dispositioning the valve.
A passed pressure test does not prove every service requirement
It does not by itself demonstrate fire safety, emissions, dynamic behavior, corrosion resistance or cycle life.

What is the difference between shell and seat testing?
Shell testing evaluates pressure-boundary integrity under defined conditions; seat or closure testing evaluates internal leakage across the closed obturator under its specified direction and conditions.
Why must air be removed during hydrostatic testing?
Trapped compressible gas stores energy, increases safety risk and can make stabilization and leakage interpretation unreliable.
Can a failed valve simply be retested?
A failure requires documented investigation and disposition. Any repair and retest must follow the approved procedure while preserving the original result and traceability.
What should a valve pressure-test report contain?
It should identify the project and valve, procedure/standard, test steps, medium, pressure/time basis, instruments, results, acceptance, date and responsible or witnessing parties.
